I am relatively new to having a Mac, just about 6 weeks now. Installed the latest system update yesterday and now I'm having issues with my MBP waking up from sleep... it lags and runs slower, takes longer for the screen to come on, then to return to full brightness, takes longer to connect to my wireless, etc. What do I do to repair this issue? Anyone else having this issue?

Do you have a backup plan in place currently?

If you are not backing up regularly there is really very little that you can do after you have installed updates except perhaps go to an apple store and try the genius bar approach.
