Random black square

I sometimes (once or twice a day) get a random solid black square on my screen, in random places, on random applications (from Safari, to Photoshop, to Indesign and illustrator). It goes away when I highlight text behind it in Safari, or when I grab something in Photoshop or the like. Does anyone know what this is?

Have you installed Onyx on your machine? I seem to recall that one version had a bug which led to an odd box appearing although sadly can't remember much more...

If it's not the Onyx bug, post a screenshot so we can better see what they're like.
