So this is weird. It has happened a handful of times but I have yet to determine how and why.

Randomly, the battery drains rapidly as if I am using the radio for an extended period of time, but I am not. Today I was on the phone for probably 15 minutes total. I went out and used the iPod and played music, but it was paused when not in the car. My usage says 2 hours and 14 minutes since last full charge (last night). WTH is using what for 2 hours and 14 minutes? What falls into the 'usage' category?

Drain the battery life completely (or as much as you can, and when I say that I mean after the screen turns off keep pressing the home button repeatedly to get that battery drained icon) and then charge it fully.

In other words, calibrate your battery display. If you're on 2.2 try holding the home button when you're in Safari to get back to the home screen. This will close it completely, apparently a developer found that 2.2 keeps Safari running or something.
