Hello, I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro and recently I've got this weird thing going on.
Sometimes (2 to 3 times a day) my mbp just freezes and gives me this gray screen (see photo). I really can't find anything to help me out, I'm using the Yosemite OS btw...
Also it boots fine and does not freeze when I open a particular program or anything, it's like I said very random and therefore a hard problem to solve...

If it's a 15"/17" model, Radeongate hit it.

Apple has announced a repair program for it, so you can repair it for free.

This is called a Kernel Panic.

Usually the computer stores a log of what caused the error. Seeing as your model is a 2011 you could very well be having logicboard problems as the poster above me stated.

I have 2011 MBP and had a similar problem.
It turns out it was RAM that I had put in about 2 years ago. I purchased Crucial RAM, but after 2 years it failed causing that similar problem.

At first I thought it was Radeongate also. How many chimes do you get on start up during that error?

If you had put in third party RAM, I would have that checked out first.
