so this stopped for a while but just started again.
Sometimes, just randomly, for no reason that I know of, my macbook will make this "bump" noise. like a synthesized bass drum.
It doesn't do it at any interval that I know of but it freaks me out because I don't know what it is.

I do not have garageband open by the way.
 
it's not that it's loud, it's that it just happens randomly. It hasn't happened for a while but I have no way of knowing what caused it in the first place.

Taken a look at your widgets yet? What about recording via the built in microphone for an hour or two and post the trimmed result?
And what MBP is it exactly?
