I'll preface this by saying that I'm still a Snow Leopard user. Haven't upgraded yet, but I've been thinking about it.

Being a Snow Leopard user, I've occasionally used iChat for video chatting and IMing. Does anyone know why Apple split it into Messages and FaceTime? Just curious.

Maybe because they know some people might use one or the other and not both? I don't use FaceTime myself.

I think they were also planning on the death of instant messaging, they didn't want to add to something that was already dead to most and it was an easy way to slowly discontinue iChat in the long run without causing a huge disruption.
