My 16 Pro Max is randomly shutting down when I am taking photos with apps other than the stock camera. It has happened 5-6 times with Moment, ProCamera and Halide.

It starts the same everytime. The viewfinder is being overexposed greatly like the ISO is increasing a lot although I didn’t touch the ISO controls. Then the phone shuts down. It does not reboot. It needs to be manually started again.

Anyone else experienced this or is my unit defective?

If you've tried restarting and re-installing those apps, maybe take it in? I took mine in because it was crashing/rebootting incessantly and they confirmed it's a hardware problem. Sounds like yours is very specific and contained, though.

Yeah, only happens while taking photos with manual camera apps. Otherwise I had zero reboots or shutdowns.

Just spoke to AppleCare and they ran diagnostics on the phone and found no issues. He confirmed that there are many issues with iPhone 16 and iOS 18.0 combo and suggested that I wait for a software fix. If that does not solve it they will replace the phone.

So I guess I just have to wait for 18.0.1.
