I recently got a 24" Dell Ultrasharp to use as a secondary monitor for my 2010 13" MBP (2.4 GHz processor, 4gb RAM). My current setup has the MBP on an mStand next to the monitor. Since moving to this set up about 2-3 weeks ago, my MBP has twice randomly white screened. A hard reset brings it back just fine, but I'm worried that the problem will get worse.

Would this problem have anything to do with the additional monitor? Not sure what kind of strain I've added to my system resources. I ran a hardware test and it reported no trouble. I should also mention that I tend to leave my computer on. Shutting it down overnight would probably help...

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Unplug the monitor and see if the white screening returns. I have my rMBP connected to an apple cinema display and never incurred a white screen but that doesn't mean the external monitor is not causing your issues
