After seven years, I upgraded my Mac. It's the longest I've gone with a Mac (or computer, really) without upgrading. In the past, when it was introduced, Launchpad used to reset when moving computers or even, as I recall, with major operating system upgrades. At the very least, it seems to have stabilized between OS updates over the years, and so I spent some time painfully dragging and dropping things between screens to set it up in such a manner that it was somewhat useful. The upgrade went flawlessly, using Migration Assistant and connecting the two Macs via Thunderbolt (one using Thunderbolt 2 with an adapter.

And of course: Launchpad looks like I had never touched it.

It was already egregious that we needed to drag and drop between screens to get it sorted instead of being able to use some sort of list, but this is the sort of thing that makes it feel like Launchpad was ported from iOS and has been forgotten about.

I'm here to complain, to ask if anyone has a better way, and to share what I've found when briefly searching about this issue.

The most promising seems to be LaunchPad Manager, which isn't free (but it is cheap). It has a few features that might make sorting a bit easier but it still seems like you need to drag and drop. Most importantly, though, you can save the layout and reload it. So even if Apple won't let it transfer between computers (or presumably, Time Machine restores), you can restore your work on your own.

Another is from one of our own forum members, @molay . This one is free and seems designed mostly to automate sorting in various ways.

If anyone has any better suggestions, I am all ears.
