UnrarX, as recommended in post #2 or The Unarchiver can help.
Simply install the software you chose to use and then double clicking a .rar file should automatically extract it. If not, OPEN WITH > choose application.

Another vote for UnrarX & The Unarchiver:
UnrarX is a very basic app an i mean that in a good way in that it won't clutter your system. The Unarchiver is more integrated into OS X, if you are only needing to deal with RAR files occasionally then UnrarX is the best solution, i use this app myself. If you are dealing with a high volume of RAR and or other compressed files then The Unarchiver is a better choice.

I personally use WinRAR as I find it easy and simple to use, though aside of the others mentioned above I know there is also WinZIP as well which is much like WinRAR. Safest place on the net to download would always be your trusted Downloads.com. Though I don't know if this is common stuff being you're in the UK.
