Rar vs Zip Compression

Hi,

I was wondering what if there are any advantageous reasons to choose rar compression over Zip or gzip for that matter, and vice versa. The reason I ask this is that I see so many different compression types over the internet and torrents and wonder if some of them are out-smarting the other...

There's not much difference between them. Some may compress slightly smaller than others, but, for the most part, they're pretty much the same.
