Ratings for songs disappearing

I have a brand new iphone 3gs .... the other day at work I meticulously gave one-star ratings to the songs I wanted to delete, and now that I connected it to my laptop, none of the ratings are showing up in iTunes or on the ipod.

I disconnected it, gave a few songs some ratings, then plugged it back in and they were gone.

Something I'm missing? If I rate the songs in iTunes, my phone will say "Sync in progress" and the rating will show up on the iphone. So it seems to work one direction only!

Also, I don't sync my songs to my iTunes. (lots on my phone that's not on the computer ... I'm nearly out of room on my hard drive!)

I'm going to try following his advice of having 999 or less songs and see if it works. Good luck to you!
