I put the new 4S defender otter box case on the phone and I can still hear that small rattle near the camera. I know it's normal but I feel like my old 3GS was built more brick like. I checked 7 different phones in the store and they all sound the same. If I got a replacement chances are it would rattle :(

It will. You'll get used to it though :) When I noticed the same behaviour on my 4 it really annoyed me and I kept tapping the corner by the camera. I disn't even know then that it is quite common. It is like getting used to a metal bracelet watch rattling :)

Oh come on...that phone is made of plastic and all the Apple fans know plastic isnt any good. Just ask the people slamming the GS2 for it.

All glass is the way to go. Just dont drop it! :p

I only hear the rattle when I tap on the corner right by the camera. So I just don't tap on that spot :) Do you hear it other times, like during normal use?

Never had any of my iPhones rattle. (2g,3G,3GS,4,4s)

Is it the lense that rattles? Maybe it has some type of optical stabilizer that comes loose when its not on. Does it rattle while your using the camera app while recording video?

That is exactly what it is.

Just tried this out and mine rattles more when recording video.

It happens when I set it on the table, desk, or wherever. I don't notice it everytime, just when I set it down a certain way. Doesn't bother me at all though, albeit I am not the crazed Apple perfectionist that some are. I would never return the phone over it.

There should be a sticky stating that the rattle is normal.

There is a lens in the camera that moves to focus, when there's no current to the focusing mechanism, the lens just floats there and can be rattled with a tap.

It rattles only when I tap on the back or when I set it down a certain way. It does not rattle when I shake the phone.
