the new batt had thin plastic sheet attached to each cell in the back, but lying loose on top.
I have had a few different answers.
Leave on or cut off?

Left on, or peeled off, it won't make a practical difference.

Looks like a NOS genuine battery. What was the manufacture date on it?

I did not check the DoM on it, It may be NOS.
The one I took out ,which was the OEM, didn't have the plastic, which was why I asked.
The first charge ran 10 hours with the screen on and playing music from my server. Simultaneously.
Way better than 3 mins it was down to. heh, heh, heh

Coconut Battery may tell you the date of manufacture if you're interested.

That looks like it covered adhesive, though IIRC 08-17 Air batteries didn't have any.

Where did you purchase it from?

My curiosity was piqued because the 2012 MBA I recently acquired has a battery where the back of the frame says it was made in 2016, but one of the cells has a different sticker hand-marked dated 2018. I think it was some sort of refurbished battery where they replaced the cells and recycled a genuine frame. It has clear wrapping on the cells.

It has fewer than 20 cycles on it, but only lasts a couple hours, due to age and the computer sitting unused for a few years.

Difficult to find a genuine, or OEM, battery now, and the aftermarket ones seem to be hit and miss.

I did find a place that purports to sell genuine batteries, amongst other NOS items, but their product photos conflict; on their site, it shows a genuine but old battery, and their eBay listings show what is clearly an aftermarket battery.

I've cleaned up the machine, and it now works as well as can be expected, but since it's more of a hobby/toy, not gonna throw much more money into it. Might take a chance on an aftermarket battery and call it a day.

ebay
$25 or so. Took about a week from NJ. Well packaged with Pentalobe drivers and batt splunger.
I look for the highest number of sells and rating >99%.
Been safe thus far.
OWC also sells if you'd rather avoid the known unknowns.
But it is way more $. For a 11yo MBA, I'd rather take a chance.
