Does anyone here have experience re-celling old Apple batteries, i.e. putting actual new batteries into the existing Apple casing of the battery? How much does it cost? Is it worth the trouble? Would you recommend it?
Many moons ago I read that this was possible, but cannot for the life of me find that old link.
I have a 15" Powerbook with two batteries (1 and 2 years old). My computer has no AppleCare, so I need not worry about warrantee voiding. Just a month ago in the space of a week or a day the newer battery which had been giving me up to 3 hours worth of battery life suddenly lost an incredible amount of capacity and now only lasts one hour, so now I'm down to too sub-hour batteries.
I did manage to find this site today http://www.batteryrefill.com that does the re-celling itself. It seems like a decent sight, though pricy, until one comes across a sentence like this: "There is resonably high possibillity (over 90%) that your battery can be exchanged to a new super-capacity battery even if it is completely dead." Reasonably = over 90%? Its "exchanged for" not "exchanged to", also.
Replacing the actual cells for a fraction the cost of buying a new battery seems like the economic option for someone comfortable tinkering with computers. There are certainly many who would fall into this category here at MacRumors, and I'm sure many of those could benefit to a cheap alternative to replacing old batteries.
