Change the display port spec on the MBP to allow 7.1 audio output. Not that big of a deal.

NO.

Thank you for your business.

Since the MBP was never meant to be a multimedia machine like PC laptops with Blu-Ray drives, HDMI is inappropriate. Just because you want it, it doesn't mean you should get it.

From what I've read, incorporating HDMI into a motherboard's design and not causing interference with other components is not as simple as slapping an HDMI port onto the board.

You desperately want native HDMI? Get a PC laptop.

I would settle for any sound being passed on the mini displayport. I also could not careless about HDMI on my Macbook Pro. A Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter are roughly $10 at www.monoprice.com for anyone with concerns.

Monoprice sells a combo USB/MiniDisplayPort adapter that will pass audio from the USB to and video from the MDP to an HDMI port.

Out of curiosity, will that audio connection pass full blown whatever? 5.1? 6.1? DTS ES? Anything?

Display port spec is 5.1, and it can be done via software, it could have easily have been part of the core OSX.

Can't daisy chain HDMI. Can't do it on DP either until someone comes out with a monitor that supports such. But when it happens it'll be a glorious day.

Using one connection for video and audio was my point as I knew about the usb and mini displayport to HDMI adapter.

I think that HDMI makes a ton of sense for the Mac mini's. I doubt we'll see it on Mac laptops anytime soon though.
