Re-mounting external hard drive

I am having an issue with one of my external hard drives. When I plug it in, it powers on and I can hear it running, but it does not mount to the computer. A coworker recently told me he thought there should be a way to re-mount it using the startup disk utility. Can anyone point me in the right direction on that?

Logged into an admin account, plug in the drive, then open Disk Utility (Launchpad > Other) and see how the OS sees the drive in there.
