Re-Ring A Custom Machine At Apple Store

Is it possible to re-ring (return and re-purchase) a custom configured machine (ie. MacBook Pro) in the store? If I purchase it online using my credit card, I want to re-ring it using my gift cards and possibly at an Apple Store with a lower tax rate. I've done it with "stock" configurations, but curious to how it works with custom machines.
