Re-route optical in to other output broken ?

I want to re-route the sound of my PS3 to my speakers connected through airplay. So I took the optical out of the PS3 and plugged the cable into the optical in of my Mac Pro (3.1 - 2008)

Alt clicking on the speaker icon allows me to set my input to digital in (would this be optical ?) and my output to airplay.

I don't get any sound out.

I tried to install the latest version of airfoil and it does work with it, so it's not a hardware issue. Sadly there is like a second delay for the sound to come out so I can't use that solution.

Has anyone been successful rerouting their optical in to another output ?

To reroute the input to the output on my Mac I use Rogue Amoeba's 'LineIn' application or 'Audio HiJack Pro'.

I used either of these when connecting an external analog mixer via optical to the digital input so I could monitor the mixer through my Mac. Unfortunately, there was some lag for me when doing this, but perhaps you will have better results:
