Read receipts in iMessage

Is there a way to only send read receipts for contacts?

I still want to read these messages, I just want to be able to read the message without confirming that my phone number is active. This would seem to be a sensible option, default even.

At the moment I make do by reading just the preview (I presume this doesn’t trigger the read receipt), but this is imo inadequate.

You can set each chat in messages to have read receipts or not by pressing the picture up top.
But the default if it’s off or on globally will be in the settings menu.
So if a chat is not on your contact list, you can turn off the read receipts for that one chat.
