reading a dvd-r on a powerbook g4

I have a dvd-r discs that I used to record old vhs tapes on (using a Sony RDR GX7 player). I want to play the dvds on my powerbook G4 but whenever I put one in, the computer makes unusual noises (like it's trying to read it but can't find the right space) and spits it back out.

my ATA Bus model is MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123
(if that helps, I'm really not sure).

I tried finding out what DVDs are playable on MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123 but the apple discussion forums aren't loading for me...
