Reading files from USB Drive

I use a Seagate 1 TB external drive along with my MacBook Air 11". Recently, the file names have been changed on its own as shortcuts. For instance a folder named "HD" is shown as HD.lnk but also unable to open the file. Need support on how to convert the same to the old name and also view the same.
