Can anyone direct me to a (hopefully) free software that allows me to do just that? Long story short, I downgraded from my iPhone 4 to an iPhone 3G. The iPhone 4 backup was on 5.0.1 and the iPhone 3G won't accept it as the software on the iPhone3G is too old (Apple stopped their updates on the 3G at 4.2.1).

I have tried EVERYTHING to no avail so far. Even tried the info.plist hack that tricks iTunes into thinking it's a 4.2.1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Were you using iCloud? You can get it from there.

Shouldn't your contacts sync with Address book (Mac) or gmail or Window outlook?

Just logged into iCloud. My contacts were synced! Thanks!

But I still need to figure out how to access and read my messages from a backup on a mac. :-/

You can't do that. There are programs that can backup your SMS to PDF when your phone is in working state but not from backup.

I never really cared about my SMS. As long as i get my contacts and calendar stuff back then i'm happy. I would recommend you to backup your contacts to your computer just in case icloud goes wrong.
