Okay. I’m getting the new 14 MBP.

Every single MBP I’ve had shows signs of wear on the keyboards. And I hate it. The permanent patina in the space bar and other certain repetitive use keys.

How do you all prevent this from happening?

This also drives me nuts, so hear you ? I hate looking at a shiny spacebar. Whevener I get a new MacBook I do my best to wipe down the keys and look after them, but nothing stops it happening over time.

I saw an apple patent a while back that involved the keys having a very thin glass covering or something, that would solve this issue.

Most of it is down to the natural oils on your skin ad the fact that you will tend to hit the keys in the same spot (e.g. space bar), which wears them down over time.

I know what you mean, AND it's just a part of a tool developing a patina through use. Learn to love your machine for what it is to you, not for its box fresh perfection. This is my MacBook; though there are many like it, this one is mine etc.

If you sit at a desk, put your MacBook on a stand and use an external keyboard when you can; otherwise there's nothing you can reasonably do. I used one of those rubber keyboard skins for a short time, but it detracted so significantly from the experience of using the computer that it was completely self-defeating.

I have tried the full keyboard covers in the past, and they aren’t a solution either. The rubber/silicone made all of my keys look shiny/worn over time, anyway. And this was a “good” Moshi cover.

Maybe if someone like dbrands made clear matte vinyl individual key cutouts? Even if just for the space bar and other main function keys (Enter, Shift, etc)… I’d give those a try!

EDIT: Oh— these do exist! I may have to get some…
