I am just finishing up my studio with a large green screen stage and was reading options on keying in the forum. The consensus seems to be that the DV format is not to hot for keying. I have a couple of Sony DCR-VX 2100 cameras that only have firewire digital. I am thinking about buying a new Sony HDR-FX1000 because it has a HDMI connect.

My computer is a mac tower/250mh, the last one before the intel switch. I can buy a HDMI card to run the camera into the computer, but my question is:

Can I stream HDMI back out of the computer real time so that the talent can react to the image that I am keying into the background? I have both a video projector and a large screen plasma tv in the studio that I can project the image with the HDMI signal.

I have worked in TV stations and production switchers key in real time, but is it possible with a computer mix. I have Final Cut, Shake (It guess that is gone before I have a chance really work with it / 500 more bucks lost to progress), Motion, and After Effects (which I haven’t used in a couple of years).

One note on keying is that Final Cut is a lot more precise at color keying than Motion. I love Motion because of working in real time, but it definitely has its drawbacks.

I would appreciate any comments on the real time issue. I don’t want to dump another three grand for a new camera and have it fail to complete the mission.
