It just occurred to me that maybe the new camera will be designed the way it is rumored for a couple of reasons.
One is obviously to mix up the design language. Probably also an attempt at having more space for the camera and other components.
But thirdly, maybe to give iPhone photos shot with a flash a more camera like look, like one of these Polaroid cameras.
The shadows add much to the flair these pictures can have. And while it’s a downgrade for normal everyday pictures, for many people this would still be a selling point.
It’s still a short while and I’m curious what people think Apple wants to accomplish with their rumored new design.

The camera layout has been changed for two reasons;

1. To make the phone look new compared to the now old design.

2. The flash and lidar have been moved as the middle lens will be getting a larger sensor.

The flash being moved won’t have any effect on picture quality, or how the flash looks on a photo when used. No “real” camera has the flash that close to the lens anyway.

Design is obviously always a „feature“, however I would be surprised if there was no noticeable difference in how shadows look, because duh of course it will look different. The question is if it’s gonna be labeled a „feature“, too. I’ve compared pictures taken with different cameras and flash placements and the iPhone flash looks too sterile compared to the more characteristic look some dedicated cameras have. They give the picture more depth.
Obviously you’re right, the main reasons for the redesign are, design, and internal space.
Hopefully though there will be a little more to it than that, something we didn’t think about previously, like with the Dynamic Island.
We’ll see.

Third reason. To sell different cases, i.e., the old case will not fit.

It hardly ever does… the last time was with the iPhone X and Xs.
The cameras kept increasing, they added buttons and slightly changed the placement of existing ones.
So, no. That’s not a reason.

Apple don't care about case sales, they only offer the silicone cases really these days and most people buy third party. Plus in the past the cases never carry over to the next year anyway due to slight hardware differences, think there's only been a few examples where that has not happened; the 5 to 5s to SE and the X to XS.

They've changed it because its a slightly improved 16 Pro and making it look a bit different gets people to buy it without looking into the finer details. Marketing 101.
Ah yes. Why wouldn’t Apple just elongate the camera numb, everybody‘s favorite feature, without giving it any further purpose or putting any more thought and effort into it?
Reading online I can see people are reeeaaally exited to buy this phone because of its new stunning design…
Obviously a new design will mean people that are shallow enough to care about having a thing that looks newer than everyone else’s thing are more willing to buy it, but that can’t be its main purpose to exist.

There's more reasons to buy it under the 'slightly better 16 Pro' definition which I couldn't be bothered to elaborate on. It's just people with 16 Pro's have less reason to buy it, which is obvious in this day and age. Reading online the response is quite muted, people seem less bothered these days as smartphones, especially iPhones have essentially looked similar and offered small incremental upgrades. I can't say I have a seen a big buzz around the aethetics of the 17 Pro, more that people have compared it to a Google Pixel and criticised making rhe camera module much bigger. I bought a 16 Pro Max last year and regret not getting the 15 Pro Max which from what I have seen, would have given me an identical experience for my needs. I will think twice about buying the current iPhone in future as I think it offers less incentive compared to 10 years ago.

I mean, that's technology in a nutshell though...

Incremental improvements year upon year. The days of revolutionary phone tech are long gone, we've peaked already.

16 was an improved 15, was an improved 14, was an improved 13, was an improved 12 etc.

Yep, technology always reaches a plateau at some point. Much like Electric vehicles are in the technology race era now, but at some point it will reach a standard. We all know what we want our smartphones to do and expect them to do. Its largely improved cameras and gimmicks keeping upgraders interested to some extent. Remember 10 years ago when going into work with the latest iPhone would attract conversation? No nobody gives a toss and thats just a sign of the times I think.
