I imagine that there are a lot of iPhone 11 Pro owners who are considering an iPhone 14 Pro, but this will apparently be the first thread on the benefits.

Currently using an iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'm mostly interested in the question from a still photography and video perspective. I purchase outright, so a contract isn't a consideration.

Views on reasons to upgrade or pass until iPhone 15?

I try not to look for reasons to upgrade. It doesn’t happen until I have a reason for it. For me the reasons to upgrade are…

- My current device no longer meets my needs
- It needs repair work that no longer makes financial sense.
- I just really want something new.

As it stands. My iPhone XS is still plenty fast. It has good battery life and still looks nice. I won’t be upgrading. As I’m happy with what I’ve got.

If I do upgrade from my 11 Pro Max it would be due to me simply wanting something new. From a Photography perspective I honestly hope Apple upgrade the Wide Angle camera to be a lot better at handling light along with increased zoom distance of the telephoto lens. Not much seems to have improved in the wide angle and telephone since the 11 Pro, the upgrades have been very incremental for both lenses while the main lens has seen more upgrades and is rumoured to be getting an all new larger sensor with 48MP.

I am currently an iPhone 11 Pro Max user and the main reason for wanting to upgrade to the iPhone 14 ( Pro Max) is because I want a better camera, 5G, and other small bells and whistles.

Also, my mom needs a new phone ( she still has an iPhone 7 Plus that isn’t working well) and has been asking me for my 11 Pro Max for a while 😂.

Thanks, you remind me that I should check the status of 5G rollout, and especially what it means in practice, where I am (New York).

May want to wait for demonstrations and whatnot comparing the 14 pro vs the 11 pro when the phone is actually announced but chances are it will be significant improvements. I would think the 13 pro would already be a pretty big bump from the 11 pro especially in terms of video quality, so there’s basically zero chance you’ll be disappointed in the improvement from the 11 pro to 14 pro, but no one can say for sure.

Excited for Apple’s announcement in a couple of weeks!

I'm likely going to keep my 11PM for another year because I want my next iPhone to be USB-C finally. Only way I will upgrade is if it dies a horrible death between now and then.

5G is still pretty dodgy in most places from what I've heard. I recommend not using that as a reason to upgrade. Hopefully in the next year they finally get it working well.

The question is, would you give up Midnight Green for a better camera? I wouldn’t, that’s why I never dared to get 11 Pro.
But seriously, it‘s probably worth to upgrade for second year already.

I’m dreading the prices they will announce for the 14 pro and 14 pro max phones. Absolutely can’t afford to spend a lot of money this year, so upgraded from 11 pro to the 13 pro for a good price. Now hoping I won’t regret it in 10 days!!!

I’m sure you won’t, 13 Pro is almost a perfect a phone for me, minus the Lighting and photos it takes. But 14 will keep the Slowthing and the AI occasionally making terrible cardboard cutouts from people might not improve (just have the Live Photo always on to select your AI-free frame).

I’m not really sure I understand how anyone can answer this question for you. The needs from your end are subjective and only you can really answer if an upgrade is needed (or wanted). Beyond that though, you are asking people to give you input on a device that hasn’t even been announced. So any opinion would be based on rumor/speculation and not anything you should be using to make a decision.

Hang back for a week and a half, gather up the data and make the call then based on your own situation. Don’t let random people sell you one way or the other.

Personally I found the display on the 11 Pro Max to be soft as butter. Two AppleCare replacements due to scratched screens, and I handle my phones carefully. Ceramic Shield is a huge improvement. 13 Pro was dropped onto concrete (not by me) and though the sides got scuffed the screen is still fine. So if you've ever had that issue, that's a plus.

I'd say go for it, to me the upgrade from an 11 to a 13 was worth it so 14 will be even better. But if you can hold out you might want to wait for USB-C on the 15. If you do wind up taking a lot of high-res video it will be a hell of a lot faster to export it over USB-C.

I have to agree with your signature. Your comment is also true but the signature gets me steamed all over again. Sierra Blue was a dumb launch color. I would have got the green in an instant if it were an option. Why does Apple do this to their best customers.

Unless they’re able to work out usb 3 transfer rates over lightning. I haven’t seen the rumor here on MR, but other places have mentioned the possibly of usb3 speeds over lightning is possible on the 14.

Especially if they do 8k they’re going to NEED. A faster transfer rate. Because if they don’t, Apple clearly doesn’t care about professional videography work.

Does Live Photo actually stop that terrible 13pro post processing oil painting nonsense?

(My young daughter always looks like a doll in the photos she’s in. It’s embarrassing Apple put out that software and call it “amazing”. I would never recommend it to anybody that cares about photo quality ☹️)

Because Apple wants you to spend more money.

At best, though, I think Apple seems to be comfortable offering things for everybody every two years cycle.

For example: no mini 14 this year, but a Max size 14. People get their choice from two years of tech instead of just one.
Also, color choices: purple is only on the 12 mini, but not the 13 mini, yet the 12 mini was still sold new this past year.

Now, the pro colors are just a slap, for sure: Apple doesn’t offer New old Pro phones. Take the newest or buy used/refurbished/third party you peasant! Haha

Runs Argument Clinic on “Midnight Green is the best colour Apple ever made”. €3 per 5 minute session.
Your signature is indeed glorious 🤣

I bought a used midnight green 11pro about a month ago and I’m in freakin’ love with this design.

It’s back looks almost black in low light, and green in bright light. And the stainless steel edges look black most of the time anyway. From the front which is excellent to concentrate on the screen instead of distracted by the bezel color.

🤤 and this curved edge makes holding it so, so nice. The stainless steel isn’t at all slippery like the awful 11 aluminum was for me. I wish I had just splurged back then and got a 11pro new from reseller instead of the 11 new from Apple. I would have had two whole years of cell phone joy by now, instead of an 11 for a year (gigantic brick; blah screen), and then a 13mini since launch day which was not perfect as a small phone (too tall, and no premium stainless steel material, and had stupid huge cameras, even though the photos are noticeably better than 11pro slightly).

Okay, just appreciating the 11pro. It’s new to me. Sorry for the gushing. 😄

I'm upgrading from the 11 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max because this phone is three years old and I just want a new one. I used to upgrade every year but the 12 Pro was meh to me and when I went to buy a 13 Pro Max, availability was limited and I couldn't decide on gold or blue. That eventually lead to time passing and a new year, so I decided to wait another 6 months for the 14 Pro Max. Now the decision will come down to color. Upgrading the Apple Watch is tempting too but this 5 series still works great.

There are a lot of threads online talking about 4G coverage getting worse though. Some guy from Verizon says standalone 5G towers are replacing 4G towers. Who knows if he’s right, but if he is, it would add weight to using 5G as a reason to upgrade since 4G coverage may keep getting worse while 5G keeps getting better.

😩 Verizon is terrible these days whether on 5g or 4g. They need to fix their service pronto.
