So,

As I didn't do sufficient research beforehand, I thought that moving my 35gb iTunes library to an external hard drive was as simple as click and drag...

But apparently not.

I tried moving the library xml file as well, but that doesn't seem to be working.

Is there ANY WAY, other than individually opening each of those however many thousand songs/clips, that I can rebuild this library? Does anyone have any suggestions?

You have to point your iTunes to that folder.

It would have been easier to put the files back to where they were, then change the directory where you want them, then use the Consolidate Library Option, which will copy everything to the new location, then when it is done, you can delete the originals.
