I was just given a MBP 15” TB model for my birthday last week but my parents had actually purchased it at Best Buy back in July. I don’t know why they purchased it so early I think they were opening a BB CC and wanted the points...

However, I’d really prefer the 13” model for a number of reasons—heck I’d even prefer the MacBook or MacBook Air, I just need smaller than a 15” device.

But I’m obviously outside of even the 30-day extended return period for Best Buy Elite members, but I realize my parents paid around $2400 for this laptop when including tax so if I were going to try to switch to the 13” model I’d want to do so responsibly (ie. losing as little as possible on their initial purchase.)

Does anyone have any advice? The 15” is obviously in pristine condition, I did unseal the box just to see how that size felt but it’s otherwise been untouched. I know apple has a recycling program does that offer a decent amount back? Or am I better off with one of the websites online? Or craigslist?

Or does anyone know if there’s a circumstance like this where best but will do a direct “exchange” and just put the remaining amt in store credit? I mean there must be times when there are ppl who give gifts outside of the return period...?

Or am I going to take such a huge loss whatever I try that I would do best to just keep the 15”?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Having that seal on would have made a better resale value, but with it off I think you can expect to get around 85-90% return at very best. Certainly do not take it to apple, they will give you probably 70%, but it may be worth asking. Your best bet is put it on craigslist and see what offers you receive.
