I received the following email today after posting about my 10.4.3 upgrade issues on Apple's forums.

Dear Apple Discussions member,

Regarding your Apple Discussions posts about the updating to Mac OS X 10.4.3:

AppleCare Engineering is interested in additional information from you. If you have recovered to a usable computer and have not used Erase & Install to get it to this state, please consider performing the following item:

- Mount the attached CaptureData703.dmg and run the CaptureData.app. Follow the instructions and attach the subsequent disk image file that is on your desktop to a reply to this email.

If you have any questions or problems with this request, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your support.

The disk image file was attached to this email.

Has anyone ever seen such a request or know if it's normal? I don't know what information I'll be sending, should I simply reply and ask that?

Why would it be abnormal? It may be an uncommon request, but it sounds as though they're trying to help. Why not run the app and then see if the resultant file is decipherable in textedit?

And they say Apple don't look at the forum

Apple Support actually sent me that same file when I had an issue with a Panther update once. It wasn't as a result of a forum post I had contacted them directly. It runs some kind of diagnostic of your system and produces a report which you then send back to them. Come to think of it nothing ever come of it.
