I needed warranty today and I wasn't sure what would happen to my iPhone 4S I purchased device-only and was unlocked.

Well rest assured, your replacement device will also be unlocked. In fact the Genius went ahead and showed me they have a field on their computers when they looked up your serial number and it shows the device as unlocked or not.

I know someone posted earlier that they were contacted by Apple about this, and I was a bit skeptical about the whole situation, but now I'm sure Apple will support us "early" unlocked 4S owners.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Wait... I plan on exchanging my iPhone 4S because it has some paint blemishes and pixel issues, but are you telling me that they will give me an unlocked phone as a replacement?

No, read it again.
Only if its unlocked you will get an unlocked replacement.
If your phone is locked to a specific carrier you will receive a replacement with the same lock.

Only if your current iPhone 4S is unlocked!

If your current iPhone 4S is lock to a carrier, the replacement will also be locked to that same carrier.

Can I go in the store and buy a full price AT&T 4S and it will be unlocked? (in NYC) I don't have an AT&T account at all, I have T-Mobile.
