Receiving error messages after formatting drives?

I have formatted several drives recently with Sierra as Mac OS Extended Journaled Encrypted and each item I receive an error, and after reformatting a second time it works. Any idea why this is happening? So far, it has happened with four separate drives.

I've had issues like that just trying to format unencrypted. Second attempt usually works. Seems like Disk Utility has trouble unmounting the drive...but I don't know.

So...it's not just you.
