Receiving mass texts from an Iphone

I do not have an Iphone and I have a data blocked with my ATT plan. I can receive an individual text from a friend who is using an Iphone. However, when the friend sends a text to more than one person, I get the text but it is blank. ATT says it's because the Iphone is using a picture when it sends a mass text and I can't download a picture when the data is blocked. My question is what is the different between an Iphone text to an individual and a text to a group of people. Why do I need internet access to receive the mass text?
