receiving photos via email

Ok so when I receive an email with photos attached when I click on the photo icons (box with arrow) nothing happens. iPhone 4s, iOS

Under settings I selected
Fetch new data: Manually
then advanced: manual

Am pretty sure I have the same settings on my iPad (iOS6), and download works fine. I click on the arrow icon, a photo appears and then I can click again do download.

Update:

Have found that small image files work (under 1mb), I was trying to receive one that was 1.28 mb

Is there some setting for file size that I am unaware of.

Am using the regular mail program that came with iOS5.

As mentioned above works fine with iPad on iOS6.
