Receiving/Sending IM through SMS?

how do people use sms to im instead of the data process? like with msn live for example.

some of the mobile formats allow this...like yahoo messenger allows you to sign in to your mobile number after you leave the desktop version, and you'll recieve SMS notifications of IM conversations that you can respond to..it's old and janky to me though
