Receiving Twitter notifications from followers

Does anyone know how can I receive notification from people/companies I follow on Twitter?

I've setup the built-in Twitter account in Mavericks, but I am not getting notifications. Not sure if it only sends notifications if someone directly tweets me, but not for followers?

Do I need a separate Twitter app for this?
