So it looks like the Recent Comments side bar changed? I do not see most of the forums that I used to see. Is there any way to set what forums I want to see in the Recent Comments side bar?

Unfortunately, no...the list is hard-coded. It hadn't been updated in a very long time and was missing some key topics like iOS, macOS, and Apple Watch, so we made some changes to add a few forums, reorder things, and remove some lesser used forums to streamline things a little bit.

Which forums in particular were you looking for? I don't want make any promises, and we can't please everyone obviously, but if there is enough desire we could potentially make one more minor pass at the list before our developers get too mad at me.

It just shows the most recent posts, you can't customise it.

If you want to block posts from certain forums, try using the Forum Spy or New Posts views which can be customised.

Please add back iPod (all devices) / iTunes.

Or could you also add a last xxx miscellaneous comments title to the sidebar that would include the recent comments that don't make it into one of the new categories ?

I think many people are like me and use the recent comments side bar to access the forum. If its not there, people will post questions and never get a response (i.e. if you are not going to show the recent post topic in the sidebar, most people will not see the question). I know that I started coming here to get some questions answered and that the change may adversely affect new members discovering what a good site this is.

Like the two previous posters I find it unfortunate that the graphics / design and the web development forums have disappeared from the main sidebar. Those forums seem to be the only ones where professionals can get insights, help, advice and opinions from likeminded people. With these forums disappearing from the front of the sidebar, it's more cumbersome for people to help others with coding/design questions.

I'm super reluctant to admit this ----even to myself, but I'm lazy.

I pretty much only browse the first MacRumors web page, particularly the sidebar. I've never gone out of my way to search out what might be interesting beyond that. Is there a less cumbersome way of seeing interesting threads I like than going to the Forums page and then having to dig way down into each category?

It seemed to work so well before.

I plan to stick with my two MacBook AIRs and my iPod touch for a long time. Are these forums gone for good? True, they were not that active with new news, but perhaps they could be tucked in a place called 'What's New with Old Devices".

I especially enjoyed the recent forum on the AIR, discovering that a lot of people like the AIR for the same reasons I do.

What you could do is go to this page and check to ignore everything except those two forums. Then click the new posts button at the top left of the main forum page and it would show you new posts only from those two sections.

Try New Posts or Spy.

You can tailor what forums are shown in the results from these links by blocking the ones that don't interest you.

How about making the Recent Comments column user-definable? Meaning, that we can select which Forum groups will be included in our particular view, according to our interests. For instance, personally I am not interested in "IOS Blog" so I could omit that and put something else that interests me more, and Forum groups that interest me more could be moved further up the column and those that I am not so bothered about could be moved further down to the bottom.

Thanks.

To pile on with others, let's see the Photography forum make a come back. It's actually one of the better forums out there - on any site - and is a great place to come and learn, discuss and get feedback. It's one of those "quiet" areas that is a bit of a respite from the general noise on the main page (albeit more clicks there, of course).

The all encompassing "Mac Hardware" and "Mac Software" sections on the sidebar were far batter than the current mishmash, which requires having to scroll through more data, sections and headings to see current posts. You've made it more complicated, when the simple bitesize way it was previously presented was superior. I've been so use to just glancing down the sidebar at the easy to understand presentation of previous. Now it is cumbersome and a chore, making you drill down into the actual forums. Change for change's sake is never good. The front page is now less pleasant and makes me think twice about viewing, although I'm just one user amongst thousands, so not a loud enough voice.

The previous "Mac Hardware" section was actually only the Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini forums. We just renamed it to "Mac Desktops," so the content hasn't changed at all. MacBook Pro and MacBook weren't included at all in the recent comments section, so we combined them with the MacBook Air section that was already there and renamed it "Mac Notebooks."

The "Mac Software" section was simply pulling from the Mac Apps and Mac App Store forum, so it's still there...just renamed to properly reflect the forum name.

As for all of the other requests, I'm not ignoring you. Still seeing what the pattern is to determine priorities. We won't be able to make everyone happy, but we'll see what we can do.

Frankly, I'm surprised so many people use it. It's meant more for the drive-by visitor to draw them into the forums than for day-to-day users. :)

I honestly found it very convenient to have the 5 most recent discussions up there for several very specific forums. I actually used it two ways.

For those forums which dealt with things I am not an expert in, I tried to click on at least one relevant discussion to try to learn some things from people.

For those forums which dealt with things I would consider myself more knowledgable about, I trick to click on a few that would allow me to answer questions for people and just as importantly to me, hear other peoples opinions about how they would solve the problem.

Obviously the sidebar is still there, but because it is far more all encompassing than the previous version, I have found it far less likely to find a discussion that is relevant to me. This is in turn changing the way I will use my time on the site.

I currently try to average about 10-30 min a weekday looking through this site. Since my time cannot change and it is now going to be far less efficient than before, I have started just eliminating most of the time I spent on forums. Most of my posts now are related to discussions such as this one that I have posted to previously and am now getting email notifications about.

I understand the idea behind wanting to change and I will be the first one to echo the sentiments that you cannot please everybody, but I just wanted to share my side of this change. If it is determined by the majority that the sidebar is better served to be broad rather than more specific as it was, then I will accept the changes and eliminate the majority of my time looking through the forums in favor of other news items.
