Okay so when I select a recent contact and select Message it comes up green (when the contact has iOS) and when I send it tries to message to the home phone, which BTW is the first number in the contact card. Now if I already have an iMessage in the Messages app then it open that conversation.

What am I doing wrong? Do I have to change all my contacts so the first phone number is their iPhone????

I think theres some kind of contacts bug (on iPad at least), as its not showing any Facetime details for me.

Yeah maybe - I'm gonna submit a feedback issue to Apple.

I did submit the issue to Apple - but if you make the first phone number for the contact their iPhone number, then recent contacts selects it for an iMessage. Thought I'd pass this along.

Can confirm findings. Just finished editing all my contacts so the first number listed is the mobile/iPhone one. Wow really strange. Hope Apple fixes this!
