Recent Items list in Apple icon menu

I am relatively new to Mac world. Just getting my feet wet now. I have a question about how to minimize the number of recent files display under > Recent Items

I do not want to keep all those files and programs there. Is there any way for it not to show or minimize it to say 1 or 2...??

Open System Preferences, choose Appearance (first item) and make your choice under "Number of recent items"
