Your speed basically hinges on the computer not accessing a disk more than necessary. In the case of rendering, computers with higher core counts may see better scaling. If we were talking about a 12 core mac pro and you wanted to allocate 2GB per core, you need the ram there to do it. Sometimes it's just nice not having lag when switching applications or having to worry about their settings remaining within available resources.
