For those wondering about how the 3g does compared to the older iphone in weak areas here is what I've found.

My old iphone would have some problems getting a signal in my home. It would work at times but often I'd have to go to a certain couple of places in the house and sometimes had to go outside to talk. With the new iphone, 3g shut off, I get fine reception through out the house. I get 1 to 2 bars better then before.

WiFi reception is slightly improved.

Battery really stinks with 3g.
