The last two days I've been using EDGE on my 3G iPhone due to the insane amount of usage I've had to do. Throughout this time period, I was with my friend who has an iPhone 2G.

There were many occasions, especially indoors, that my reception was better than his. For example, we ate at a restaurant last night and I had 1 - 2 consistent bars of EDGE. I was able to make calls flawlessly, browse websites, etc on my iPhone 3G. His 2G iPhone? No service. He had to borrow my phone to check the scores of the baseball games. This type of situation was quite common throughout our trip through Hollywood / Anaheim and I'm quite glad I don't have the ever hyped "iPhone 2G".

The plastic back seems to have a serious effect on signal strength, which I'd trade ANY day of the week vs. the cosmetic advantage of a metal back. 3G issues will fade, but reception strength isn't going to get any better on the old iPhones. I'm glad I have the 3G.
