A client of mine and I have been keeping an eye on the Evo series - notably the 4TB. She wants to switch out from spinning disks to SSD at some point, but has a rather healthy storage routine.
With the changing series, and PCIe bus coming to the front, it seems the old 6G products have reached their end, and finally the 2.5 4TB is down to 800 bucks in many places (even Amazon)
If for one device to extend an old system, perhaps it's worth thinking about. In the right enclosure and connected to a recent Mac, these are plenty fast for most things. That's fine for 4 TB, but what if you have someone who requires 16 or 20 in the near future. Well then, let's play the game of "What's Enough"
What's enough speed in the world of fast internals these days. What's enough with storage?
We play the game of watching the old give into the new and the vendors don't easily give in to something that eliminates their main base of customers.
