Not sure if it has been posted before, but here it goes...
my 'Other' bar showed like 13Gigs of data on my 32GB iphone4. Apps, Music and Photos showed their separate storage numbers... So I spend some time googling and it said 'App data', outlook calendar for 'Other'... Well, I changed my outlook settings to 180days vs forever and it did not change anything... So after further investigating I did the following:
via iPhone Explorer:
iphone/Root Directory/private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music
selected all folders (they are numbered, for me it was like 01 thru 46) and delete em all.
Boom, pretty much entire 13gigs are reclaimed, music and other media are all intact.
Just an FYI if someone is running into a same problem
