I am in the market to replace my 2008 external hard disk drive with an external and portable SSD.

500gb or 1tb ideally. Doesn’t have to be listed a portable but definitely external.

not wanting to break the bank and pointing in the right direction is appreciated

I'd get a USB-C 2.5" enclosure and get my choice of SSD (Samsung or Seagate, would be my choice) to place in that case. For a 500GB, it'll be $60-80. For 1TB, it'll be $130 or so. These 2.5" enclosures are smol (about the size of your phone) and powered by the USB port.

I'd stay away from no-name SSD's as they're usually lower performance or high failure rate.

Any reason why USB-C and not Thunderbolt 4? I’m asking as I plan to do the enclosure thing myself, and figured the TB4 option would be better.

USB-C is more broadly compatible, so maybe that’s the reason? (I only need mine for TB-compatible Macs/iPads).
