I'm looking for recommendations on a good, simple book for a website design beginner. I saw in another thread that a member bought "HTML&CSS" by Jon Duckett. It looks like the type of book that I would do well with - lots of visuals as opposed to wordy explanations. But it also looks like this book might be a bit dated (I think it was written in 2011 or 2012)?

Any other recommendations on a good book for a visal learner?

I've tried some different online resources and I just struggle to stay focused and follow along with online tutorials. I need a hard copy book to follow along to, along with visual/hands on materials.

Have you given http://www.codeacademy.com a try?

I read http://www.amazon.com/Introducing-HTML5-Edition-Voices-Matter/dp/0321784421/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408984572&sr=8-1&keywords=html5+remy+sharp

I thought it was a good read, it delves into HTML5 and a little javascript as well, not as colorful or visual as the Duckett book though.

For CSS I found this one to be pretty good. http://www.amazon.com/Handcrafted-CSS-More-Bulletproof-Design/dp/0321643380/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1408984706&sr=8-2&keywords=bulletproof+css

It's hard to really recommend something since there are so many resources out there. Give codeacademy a try, if you haven't already and maybe try to build something following an online tutorial again, since that's the way you'll really learn things.

Good info - thanks!

Are you looking for a real (in-deep) HTML and CSS learning experience (which I think you should) or just a quick "how-to" type of book?
What is your price range?

At the moment, I'm just looking for something for "beginners". Something easy to digest and will allow me to establish a good base of knowledge.

No real price range.

Probably the HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites would be a good start then (or Head First HTML and CSS wich I think is a bit "too" visual). Don't be afraid even if the book is from 2011/12 because HTML and CSS didn't change much since. Then, once you get the basics, it will be easier to add some HTML5/CSS3 and buy something like HTML5 Pocket Reference or CSS3 For Web Designers which is a short but fun book.

The Jon Duckett book is required reading at my school for the web classes. It is the most visual and design focused book to my knowledge.

Thanks for the advice!
