I think the optical drive in my MBP 17" 2.16 is starting to die; it's near-impossible to write to any +R media without it failing with an "illegal sense key" error, and it's developed the habit of rejecting blank -R media for no reason, although a reboot or two usually fixes that.

Can anyone recommend a replacement internal unit, preferably one that's better than the existing Matshita UJ-846 and which can be made RPC1?

EDIT - I've just looked at the "Disc Burning" part of "About This Mac", and it's reporting that it can only burn -R and -RW media. Could this be down to internal failure, or could it be due to the fact that I flashed it to RPC1 a few months ago?

is that when you began to have errors with it? if so, then that is most likely the reason for the faults.
