Hi,

I'm currently using a MacBook 16" with an external monitor and like many other people I have a problem with the fan noise. Now I want to downgrade to a 13" inch model in the hopes that is does not run as hot as the 16" when used with an external monitor. I'm mainly using my MacBook for web development and video streaming. I'm also willing to downgrade to a previous gen model (2018) if that helps with the noise.

Not sure what your budget is... I run a 13” 10th gen MBP (at would be more than adequate for web development) with an HP 31.5” e324q QHD (3560x1440) display, connected with HP provided usb-3 cable.

No heat issues/elevated temps when I run the MBP in clamshell mode with and external BT mouse and keyboard.

FWIW. I have a 16" MBP and am doing full stack engineering work with it.
I use 2 X Dell S2716DG monitors at 1440P at 144hz. (settings are important) Using These USB-c to Display port cables.
I run the computer in clam shell mode with these two external monitors plugged in, this setup draws 5-8W (radeon High side) and is COOL and QUIET.

Sometimes I run a single monitor and the laptop in normal mode (Using its built in screen) when I do this I just turn turbo boost off and its quiet and cool enough for me. (This "Normal external monitor use" draws 18-20W Radeon high side)

I decided to keep the 16" because Its nice to have a large display when working somewhere besides the desk.

I tried the new 13" and the monitor was just TINY so i returned it after 14 days.

Hope this helps.
