I recommend either an Apple refurbished Series 9, or a SE model. Both should cost a similar amount.

Apple has a Compare feature on their website that lets you easily compare the various models.

This page is handy for comparing the various watch models.

I'd recommend sticking with the aluminum models. Steel/titanium models look more professional, but that's not a concern when you are retired. The extra durability you get from the better screen and case material isn't worth the extra cost, in my opinion.

However, if you can afford it, I'd recommend taking a look at the Ultra. I know you are thinking you just want "basic" features, but the Ultra screen is much easier to read than the regular watches. Older people tend to have weaker eyesight, and if that's the case with you, then the Ultra screen could well be worth the extra cost, even if you never use any of the other Ultra features.

I would offer as an option to the Ultra the series 10 46mm. The screen size is actually a little larger than the ultra and can be viewed easier at angles. The series 10 costs less and weighs a lot less.

I would try to wait a few more months for the watch 11 if you can.
I'm hanging on to my S7 for new, as I think it was the last with the Blood Oxygen sensor/app. I'm hoping it returns, along with a blood pressure monitor, in the watch 11.....

Size isn't everything. I find the brighter screen of the Ultra helps a lot to make the watch easier to read. I also prefer the flat screen of the Ultra, especially when reading text. On the Ultra I felt like reading the news in the News app, whereas I've never been tempted to do that on the regular watch.

The blood oxygen ban is only on USA Apple Watch series 9 and later models including ultra 2.

I’ve just ordered a 10 46mm. My first Apple Watch since series 0 so should be good. Also ordered this, not sure if any good.
