The cheaper the better, providing it works, as this is a one time use thing (several tapes but that's it)

Need to be able to import to iMovie.

Before the snark starts, yes I can google, but I trust recommendations here more than your standard amazon review. :)

Couldn't tell you. But I have tried several of the cheaper ones from Dazzle to other brands, and they all had issues with the video and sound being out of sync. Reason why I won't go cheap again and get one that has a processor built into it to synchronize that correctly.

A SD camcorder will work, provided it has pass digital pass thru, or can record to the internal drive. Should be pretty cheap since most camcorders are HD now. I've used my Sony SR100 for this allot. You won't get DVD quality video but it works pretty good.
 
Cheers guys, I'll probably give the el gato a shot due to limited use. Assuming toast is similar to retail that's a bonus.
